Agent-Based Social Simulation: a Dynamical-Systems Viewpoint
نویسنده
چکیده
Physics is expanding outward from its traditional base; nowadays many physicists work on phenomena involving biology, economics, and sociology. How can we get to grips with physics in these fields where traditional equation-based modelling is difficult to implement? The so-called audience or Mexican Wave in sports stadia, in which participants jump up and raise their arms in a coordinated manner so that a wave propagates around the stadium, is an instance where structures familiar to physicists— nonlinear waves or solitons—appear in the novel context of sociophysics. Using the example of the Mexican Wave, I discuss new approaches based on cellular automata and agent-based models, and how these may be related to classical continuum physics.

The Current State of Normative Agent-Based Systems
Recent years have seen an increase in the application of ideas from the social sciences to computational systems. Nowhere has this been more pronounced than in the domain of multiagent systems. Because multiagent systems are composed of multiple individual agents interacting with each other many parallels can be drawn to human and animal societies. One of the main challenges currently faced in ...
متن کاملFixed points in models of continuous opinion dynamics under bounded confidence
We present two models of continuous opinion dynamics under bounded confidence which are representable as nonnegative discrete dynamical systems, namely the Hegselmann-Krause model (Hegselmann and Krause, Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation 5(3), 2002) and the Deffuant-Weisbuch model (Deffuant et al, Advances in Complex Systems, 3, 2000). We fully characterize the set of fixed ...
متن کاملTowards Integration of Biological, Psychological and Social Aspects in Agent-Based Simulation of Violent Offenders
In the analysis of criminal behavior, a combination of biological, psychological and social aspects may be taken into account. Dynamical modeling methods developed in recent years often address biological, psychological or social dynamical systems separately. This paper makes the first step in the development of an agent-based modeling approach for criminal behavior in which these aspects are i...

متن کاملThe extended body: a case study in the neurophenomenology of social interaction
There is a growing realization in cognitive science that a theory of embodied intersubjectivity is needed to better account for social cognition. We highlight some challenges that must be addressed by attempts to interpret ‘simulation theory’ in terms of embodiment, and argue for an alternative approach that integrates phenomenology and dynamical systems theory in a mutually informing manner. I...
